Tener de visita a amigos extranjeros es divertido: Hablas inglés, te pasas el día andando de un sitio a otro, visitas museos, sitios nuevos: Un poco como ser turista en una ciudad que casi conoces. Al llegar saludamos a la cuadrilla que había allí trabajando y en cuanto me mostré un poco interesado y sobre todo cuando les dije que mis acompañantes eran una pareja de arquitectos que venían de una famosa escuela de Viena les hizo ilusión y empezaron a contarnos cosas haciéndonos mucho mas caso que a los otros 6 o 7 turistas que había por allí, de los que pasaban un poco. Hasta nos abrieron una puerta para subir a lo alto de las torres.
El edificio es enorme, no una pequeña ermita sino una pedazo de catedral. Los materiales son totalmente contemporáneos, cemento, ladrillos y hierro principalmente. Los vimos trabajar y lo hacen todo a mano. Para conseguir hacer figuras redondas utilizan como molde neumáticos y latas, para levantar las placas metálicas hasta la cúpula de 30 o 40 metros no tienen grúa y usan una simple polea y sus brazos.
Junto con don Justo trabajaban 3 o 4 personas que se dirigían a él como “Padre”. El líder, que realmente es artificiero, lleva 18 años trabajando allí voluntariamente en su tiempo libre y me daba la impresión de que realmente es el que se curra los trabajos jodidos. Nos enseñó algunas cosas como la pila de bautismo y realmente la terminación de muchas partes de la catedral es digna de un buen artesano.
Me contaron que no hay ni permisos, ni planos ni nada. Ellos sólo construyen. Tras despedirnos preguntamos a una señora por el autobús de vuelta y además de indicarnos( mal) empezó a hablar pestes de la catedral. Dijo que ahí había trabajado todo el pueblo menos Don Justo que solo dirigía, que era dueño de muchos terrenos, que había sacado dinero para la catedral vendiendolos y que tenía un pedazo de casa y estaba haciendo otra para sus sobrinos con el dinero de las donaciones y noseque mas. Dejando a parte que fuera mas o menos verdad, esa señora me sirvió para explicar a mis amigos una de las cosas que mas odio del carácter español: La envidia y las lenguas de serpiente contra el que destaca sobre el resto o se sale de la norma.
Y ahora mi moraleja:
Normalmente recubrimos nuestras frustraciones de excusas. No llevamos a cabo nuestros sueños por vagos y miedosos pero nos hacemos creer que eran imposibles. Así justificamos nuestra falta de ambición. Don Justo y los que le ayudan se marcaron una meta y la han seguido. Quizás los demás del pueblo se rían de él y lo llamen loco, pero ellos no han expuesto la obra de sus vidas de mierda en el MOMA.
